Statement from the artists to give context to this piece -This year, we don’t celebrate colonialism. We don’t celebrate a country that has consistently undermined Indigeneity. Instead, we celebrate our enduring presence, the beauty of our culture, the resistance, our collective resilience, our individual narratives, our relations. This mural includes an image of “The Three Fires” (alluding to the Three Fire Confederacy) and of “Animikii” (the Anishinaabemowin word for Thunderbird). At the very bottom of the panel the artists have included photo transfers of children taken away to residential schools. The red of the Canadian flag painted to overlay these images represents the blood of these Indigenous students. This mural is titled Resistance (sister panel to Resilience).
